I’m Beth, I’m 22 years old, and I’ve set up Let’s Talk About Loss to try and overcome the barriers of talking about losing a parent. I’m the baby in the photo – with my beautiful mum and my beloved grandad.
I lost my mum when I was 20, and the devastation of her death affects every second of my life. I have, at the worst of times, felt all consumed by my grief. At the best of times, it is merely a part of my story. Importantly – it never goes away.
The problem is that loss is so hard to talk about. I find it nearly impossible to describe my pain using words, and often I don’t feel sad or angry, I just feel empty, which is again, really hard to describe.
I have so many wonderful friends who provide an amazing support network. But if you haven’t lost a parent, it can be tough to know what to say. When I first lost mum, I didn’t want to talk to my sister and brother about it, in case I upset them. However, they were the only ones who truly understood the pain of losing her. I also didn’t want to burden people who hadn’t lost a parent, with a pain they couldn’t understand. Luckily, I saw a counsellor and she provided a safe place for me to talk through how I was feeling. Not everyone has that luxury though, and without talking about grief, it can become an uncontrollable negative force.
That’s where the idea for Let’s Talk About Loss was born – a safe space to talk about loss with other people who will understand. This website will feature lots of different personal testimonies from people I know who have lost one – or both – of their parents. None of us will ever try to explain loss, or predict grief, or promise anything. If you want to find out more about charities and services offering practical help and advice, see the Need Help? page. Instead we will simply share our stories and hope that you will find some sort of solace in knowing that you are not alone, and others understand your pain.
If you want to share your story, email email@example.com – I would love to hear your thoughts and testimonies. Want to read more of my story? Click here to read the blog post that I wrote at the beginning of this journey.
Thank you for all your love and support – and let’s talk about loss.
I’m going to Namibia in October 2017, to raise money for Grief Encounter, a charity who help young people who have lost a parent young. I’ll be trekking the equivalent of 5 marathons in 10 days and 30 degree heat, and I’d love you to sponsor me. Click the link below to do so!
